Anxiety

Both sides are calling this the most momentous election of a lifetime (for very different reasons), and many have invested a lot of time and energy into supporting their candidate. Everyone remembers what happened in 2016 when the polls got it wrong, and the nation and world were shocked by the election of Donald Trump. And now in 2020, the polls show Biden with a substantial lead while we have Trump and his followers employing legal challenges, falsehoods, and misinformation to sow fear and distrust in our electoral processes in order to both suppress the vote among people of color and to cast the outcome of the election into doubt should it not go their way. It is no wonder then that deeply invested people on both sides are experiencing anxiety. It is in that spirit that I wrote this poem for all of us.

My heart is anxious within me
My soul
Troubled
Will the world end on Tuesday?
If Trump is re-elected
It will not
If Biden is elected
It will not
For God remains on His throne
The heart of the king remains
In the hand of the Lord
And He directs it where He will
Nations rise
Nations fall
He ever stands
Above it all
As history bleeds
And cries
And screams
Into eternity

Will the man of lawlessness arise?
Or subside
Back into the abyss
For now
Will there be mercy?
Or will there be judgment?
No one ever deserves mercy
All deserve judgment
And yet we are so often granted the one
Graciously
While the other is withheld
Mercifully
I myself pray simply for justice
For the Father’s will to be done
And the One who alone is just
And the Justifier
Superintends all of time
All of creation
Every nation
Every people
Everywhere
And so I can say
Wholeheartedly
Let Thy will be done
For Thou art good
And I have entrusted my soul to Thee
So be at peace
O my soul
